This group started up in February 2024, and has since met monthly. We have settled on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the afternoon, and the venue is Rokewood Court Retirement Home in Kenley. The room they kindly allow us to use is lovely.
Some of the subjects we have covered so far are:
February - Brief Outline of Western Philosophy
March - Free Will and Aristotle
April - Beauty and Plato
May - Truth and Hume
June - Death and Schopenhauer
The format is that I have a plan for the session, cobbled together from various sources, Books, Internet, Podcasts, Radio, etc, and then I present it, with everyone chipping in or asking whenever they feel like it. I am not a trained philosopher - though one of our group is (!) - and I often don't know the answer, but we seem to manage.
There are 13 people on the list at the moment, and with around 10 usually attending this is enough to have a good discussion, but we could accommodate more - the room at Rokewood Court is large enough.
There are no requirements or set reading lists, and all that is needed is an open mind. Each session lasts about 2 hours. The session in July is planned for 6 days after the General Election, and is on Political Philosophy.
