On Friday 22nd November a group from the London Discovery Group of Caterham U3A went to Borough Market. We travelled by train and met up at the coffee shop at Southwark Cathedral. A good place to have a coffee and use the loos. The market was fascinating selling all kinds of food. Every cheese you good wish for, olive oils, bread, fruit, cakes, and fish. I bought crab meat, oysters and elongated grapes which I thought were very unusual. Of course, there were stalls selling all kinds of food to eat there and then. There was even a couple of stalls selling drinks!
The market was extremely busy and Michael had made up a "Treasure Hunt" for people (working in pairs) to find specific stalls. The idea was to find 8 stalls which had been named in advance and take a "selfie" with a member of the team and the name of the stall visible. This was really fun and made sure that we went to every part of the market. It was won by three ladies working as a team (Vivien Moile, Trisha Keep, and Judi Saville) which shows that ladies are more used to markets than men!) The only problem that the competitors had was finding the "Scotch Egg" stall. This was a pity because they were wonderful!
After a rather exhausting and fun morning, and since our arms were aching, and our purses were lighter, we adjourned to "Vivat Bacchus" a restaurant on the other side of London Bridge to the Market. We all agreed that it was a lovely restaurant and the food was delicious at an excellent price. They had a cheese sommelier cabinet and guests could go and see all the many kinds of cheese that they could eat. It was a very interesting and different day to our usual cultural experiences. A good warm-up for the coming trip to Winchester Christmas market.
